Surface Preparation and Coatings
Each unique environment and application requires a tailored solution and that is what we provide for our clients.
Denholm Industrial Services are able to provide Coating solutions both on-site and off-site. The off-site facticity at Port Clarence Offshore Base in Middlesbrough, on the North bank of the River Tees, allows vessels direct access to the North Sea making it ideally suited to support and execute any large topside, subsea, nuclear, marine, defence or offshore wind projects.
The team at Denholm Industrial Services are considered experts in their field and as such have gained the utmost respect of their peers including clients and paint suppliers throughout the UK and Europe.
Surface Preparation
Correct surface preparation is essential to achieving long‑lasting protective coating performance. Our teams assess substrate condition and select the most appropriate preparation method to meet specification and site requirements.
Our surface preparation services include:
- Pre‑treatment checks and defect removal
- Manual and mechanical preparation
- Abrasive blasting to Swedish Standards Sa2, Sa2.5 and Sa3
- Use of appropriate blasting media for carbon steel, stainless steel and duplex materials
- Preparation prior to protective coatings or galvanising
All works are delivered with safety, quality and consistency at the forefront to support asset longevity.
Abrasive Blasting
Abrasive blasting is carried out in accordance with Swedish Standards Sa2, Sa2.5, or Sa3. The blasting media is selected based on the type of material, the required depth of abrasion, and whether the process is completed manually or using automated wheelabrator systems. A range of abrasives is utilised, including:
- For carbon steel materials: chilled iron grit, copper slag, and steel shot
- For stainless steel and duplex materials: garnet, aluminium oxide, and glass bead
Protective Coatings
The first stage of the corrosion protection process is to inspect the steel for surface defects and remove any sharp edges. The steel is then washed and degreased before blasting. A primer is applied in accordance with the specified requirements, often followed by a multi‑coat system.
When correctly applied, the appropriate coating system will minimise through‑life maintenance and enhance structural integrity. Denholm Industrial Services has extensive experience in the application of a wide range of coating systems, including:
- Epoxies, alkyds, and urethanes
- Anti‑fouling coatings
- Non‑skid deck systems
- Glass flake systems
- Intumescent coatings
- Specialist tank linings
- Chemical‑resistant coating systems
- Solvent-free epoxies
Other services provided include
- Tank & Pipe Internal Linings
- Corrosion Resistant Pipe Wrapping
- Machine Floor Blasting Services
- Shut Down/Outage Services
- Encapsulation
Multiple-Coat Epoxy
- Polyurethane / Modified Acrylic (excellent colour retention & resistance to UV exposure).
- Polysiloxane (superior colour retention & resistance to UV exposure).
- High Build / Glass Flake Epoxy, suitable for offshore (subsea and splash zone) application with excellent abrasion resistance and suitability for cathodic disbondment.
- Anti-Fouling systems (fluoropolymer foul release or controlled depletion self-polishing systems).
- Epoxy Phenolic / Glass Flake Vinyl Ester / Epoxy Novolac Tank Linings.
- Hi-Temp Oleoresinous / Aluminium Silicone / Cold Spray Aluminium coatings, for use at elevated temperatures (above 120°C).
- These coating are available in a wide variety of colours from the BS 4800 / RAL colour standards (others may also be available).
Sign Writing & Stenciling Services
The company also carry out the following Sign Writing / Stencilling services on and off-site:
- Pipeline Identification & Branding
- SWL (lifting equipment etc.)
- Structural Identification
- Lifting Point Identification
- Tank/Vessel Identification
- Pile Markings
Passive Fire Protection
Both low and high build Intumescent PFP systems can be applied. We are qualified to apply Chartek, Jotachar & Pittchar – and can look at certification for other manufacturers’ products if specified.
We also carry out the preparation work (shotblast & application of approved primer) for Cementicious PFP application, as well as the application of approved finish coats to Cementicious PFP.
The protective systems based on coatings are normally sprayed onto the surface following mixing of the required components. A reinforcing glass fibre scrim or steel wire gauze is applied to prevent cracking and peeling of the coating under fire conditions and to provide additional strength to resist the impact of high-pressure water jets. The fire protective coating is further protected by a weather protective top layer. The fire resistant performance of the coatings is dependent on the thickness of the coating, as specified within the procedures.
Works have been carried out for clients such as Conoco Phillips Propane Project, GBL4 Project Europe & PCI Plant SSI.
Thermally Sprayed Metallic Coatings
Over the years we have applied various thermally sprayed coatings. Dealing mainly with thermally sprayed Aluminium (TSA) but also gaining vast experience applying thermally sprayed Zinc, Zinc-Aluminium and Aluminium-Magnesium.
All necessary equipment to carry out applications by the Flame Method, Arc and Powder flame method is supplied in-house.
We worked in accordance with many international standards such as EN ISO 2063, EN ISO 1395-1 and have applicators approved to ISO 14918.
There are many completed projects for various clients such as Maersk WAD, ConocoPhillips Britannia LTC, Talisman Bridge & Flare tip, Siri Dong Clamps, Burbo Banks Dong Energy, Hornsea 1 & 2 Orsted, Walney Orsted, Borssele Orsted and BP.
Coating Inspection & Quality Assurance
We routinely carry out inspection to all works carried out on our premises, and provide off-site coating and inspection services on request.
All of our Inspectors are BGAS/CSWIP, Icorr or NACE Certified. Details can be supplied on request. We can also provide 3rd party inspection qualified to NACE / Frosio, should this be a requirement of your contract.
Coating Procedures / Inspection Test Plans can be supplied to ensure that we will conform to the requirements of your specification. Full records of Climatic Conditions on our premises are maintained.
We also perform Dry Film Thickness Checks after each coat. Additional testing is available to meet the requirements of your specification e.g. Chloride Contamination, Dust Cleanliness Checks, Adhesion Tests & Holiday Detection.
Detailed Quality Inspection Records are available if requested or stipulated within our Coating Procedure. Our QA system is accredited to ISO9001, and we are NHSS Sector 19A approved. We regularly carry out works in accordance with the Norsok M-501 specification & the ISO12944 standard for various classifications of corrosive environments.
Remedial Works
Repairs to transportation and erection damage is carried out, as well as touch-up to any weld prep areas that have previously been masked during shop coating operations.
Site Maintenance
Routine maintenance works is carried out to previously coated aging steelwork/ pipework.
Direct Labour Supply
Labour supply for shut down & quick turnaround work to work under client supervision is popular with most clients.
