A complex multi-disciplinary operation showcasing specialist access and engineering expertise

Denholm Industrial Services (DIS) has successfully completed the removal of the Main Span Gantry on the Prince of Wales Bridge, delivering a highly complex phase of essential bridge maintenance works.

Working in partnership with long-standing client Amey, and on behalf of National Highways, the project required a carefully coordinated and expertly executed approach within a challenging working environment.

Following six months of detailed design, planning and risk assessment, DIS mobilised a specialist team of rope access rigging and lifting professionals, supported by marine and contract lifting partners. Close collaboration with engineering partner Eadon Consulting Ltd ensured robust design checks and technical assurance throughout every stage of the project.

The operation itself involved a series of intricate and carefully managed steps, including the installation of temporary lifting frames, securing and lifting a scissor lift unit, and the deployment of bespoke engineered lifting frames to safely dismantle each section of the main gantry.

This successful deconstruction highlights the strength of a truly multi-disciplinary approach – bringing together specialist access expertise, engineering excellence and strong collaboration between all project partners.

DIS would like to thank all those involved in delivering this project, including Amey, National Highways and Eadon Consulting Ltd, whose combined expertise and support were essential to its success.

Special thanks also go to Weathered Oak Studios for capturing the project – view more of their work at Weathered Oak Studios.

A legacy of growth, innovation and trusted partnerships since 1866

This year marks a remarkable milestone for The Denholm Group as it celebrates 160 years of heritage, growth and innovation.

Founded in 1866 as a ship’s agency business, Denholm built its early reputation within the maritime sector before expanding into shipping and logistics. Over time, the Group has continued to evolve, diversifying into new markets and strengthening its position across the UK.

Key moments along the journey include the expansion into industrial services in the late 20th century, strategic acquisitions to enhance scaffolding and access capabilities, and continued investment in specialist technologies that support complex infrastructure, power and marine projects. These milestones have helped shape Denholm into the multi-disciplinary organisation it is today.

Now operating across a wide range of sectors, Denholm Industrial Services plays a vital role within the Group – delivering large-scale projects, supporting critical infrastructure and maintaining the same commitment to safety, quality and reliability that has underpinned the business for more than a century.

As Denholm celebrates its 160th anniversary, the milestone is not only a reflection of its proud history, but also a testament to its people, partnerships and continued focus on innovation and growth.

Denholm Industrial Services – Business Focus

Supporting local regeneration through design and delivery

Denholm Industrial Services (DIS) is currently progressing works on Block A at Talbot Gardens, a development selected for its prime location and strong regional connectivity. Situated just moments from the Tamar Bridge and Brunel Bridge – the main crossing between Devon and Cornwall – the site offers direct access to the wider region, along with views across to Mount Edgecombe.

Talbot Gardens forms part of a wider regeneration initiative, contributing to the delivery of four modern apartments alongside 50 new homes. The neighbouring development, also being delivered by DIS, will provide a further 130 homes for local residents, supporting the growing demand for high-quality housing in the area.

To meet the demands of the site, the team has implemented an innovative scaffold design incorporating multi-floor loading bays. This approach enables safe, efficient movement of materials while maintaining productivity across the build programme.

Beyond construction, the regeneration of Talbot Gardens is set to bring lasting benefits to the community. Alongside improved housing provision, the development will help support local businesses through increased footfall and ongoing investment in the area.

Talbot Gardens represents another important step forward for DIS, demonstrating its role in delivering projects that help create better homes and brighter futures for local communities.
