Client: BAE Systems
Location: Multiple locations
Project: New build of six offshore patrol vessels
Background
Following delivery of works in support of the Type 45 Destroyers, Denholm Industrial Services was awarded a multi-service contract as part of the six new build offshore patrol vessels by BAE Systems. We were contracted to supply and coordinate multiple services, including access, scaffold, containment / encapsulation, surface preparation, painting, general cleaning, final inspection cleaning and protection of finished areas. The contract location originated at HMNB Portsmouth.
The Challenge
Due to programme congestion at HMNB Portsmouth, our client relocated the build of two complete vessels to Scotstoun and Govan shipyards. In addition, multiple sharp corners and edges created an increased health and safety risk within the internal workspaces.
Our Solution
Despite the change in location and obvious logistical challenges, Denholm Industrial Services mobilised additional Safety, QA and site management to these new sites, whilst meeting our original commitments in Portsmouth. In doing so, we were able to support BAE Systems in regaining overall programme traction.
Applying our ‘safety-first’ and flexible mindset on site, we turned all sharp edges and corners into a 2mm radius prior to applying the paint system, resulting in a safer working environment and a high quality finish.
As part of the contract we provided insurance backed long term warranties (up to seven years) for our workmanship on the project. Our insurance required full traceability of the QA records, which was met via our existing QA system; no amendments to our QA system were required as it exceeded the requirements stipulated by the insurers. Our QA paperwork then integrated specific requirements from the paint manufacturer and our client’s QC department, resulting in the production and authorisation of one single pack for each area.
